“When I started breeding Scottish Folds, I had no idea what I was getting into…”

When I first started breeding Scottish Folds, I thought I knew what it meant. I loved cats, I had a cozy home, and I was ready to welcome a few fluffy kittens into the world.

But the truth is… I had no idea.

Being a breeder — a real breeder, one who does this out of love and not for money — is a whole different world. It’s not just about cute kittens. It’s about understanding nutrition, feline health, preventive veterinary care, behavior, genetics, and the emotional rollercoaster of birth and loss.

More than cuddles and purring

You learn to help queens through labor, to care for fragile newborns at 3 AM, to recognize the subtle signs of something going wrong. You spend sleepless nights monitoring temperatures, weighing kittens, feeding them every two hours if needed. It’s exhausting, emotional, and intense. But it’s also beautiful.

Then comes the next level: education.

True breeders never stop learning

You take courses. You study feline genetics. You go to cat shows — excited and proud — only to have judges turn your “perfect” cat around and gently show you every tiny flaw. It stings. But you learn. You grow. You realize there is no such thing as a perfect cat, and that’s what makes breeding a craft, not a transaction.

You start setting goals: better health, stronger lines, more balanced type. You plan breedings carefully, knowing that with Scottish Folds, there is no room for mistakes — no fold-to-fold pairings, ever. Even with all your planning, Mother Nature and your queens have the final word. Timelines shift, seasons change, and genetics always finds a way to surprise you.

Sometimes, the heart chooses

And just when you think you’ve figured it all out, she’s born: a longhaired girl, absolutely stunning, right in your own home. Suddenly, all your rational plans are thrown out the window. Your heart whispers, “Keep her.”

Breeding is like life — you plan, you prepare, but sometimes the heart decides. And honestly? That’s where the magic happens.
