The importance of hydration in cats

I have chosen to address the vital issue of hydration because I realize that we often fail to recognize the importance of this aspect of our health, which can have a significant impact on our well-being. A personal experience that highlighted this essential need was when I brought my cat, Rambo, from Russia.

The ordeal of his 48+ hour journey included traveling by train, plane and car over considerable distances. There was a bit of a scare when we met in Bucharest – Rambo didn’t look like the cat I was expecting. His fur was shedding alarmingly, and my fears of possible hair loss all the way home were intense. From the first moment, however, I felt Rambo’s love, even though I was terrified at the prospect of losing his hair.

During the trip, I tried to offer him water and food, but due to the stress, he refused everything, expressing his need only by soft purring and begging for affection. It wasn’t until I got home a few days later that Rambo recovered. Determined to better understand his experience, I began reading and learning more about stress and dehydration in cats. I understood it best at the breeder’s course I took at the Campus Felinarium, where I took an entire class on the subject.

Hydration is essential for cats, just as it is for humans. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Kidney Health: Cats are prone to kidney problems, and proper hydration can help prevent these problems and keep the kidneys healthy.
  2. Urinary Tract Infection Prevention: Proper hydration helps maintain a healthy urinary tract and can reduce the risk of painful urinary tract infections.
  3. Weight Control: Well-hydrated cats tend to have better weight control, which is important for preventing obesity.
  4. Healthy skin and coat: Proper hydration helps prevent dryness and dandruff, and helps maintain healthy skin and coat.
  5. Normal organ function: Water is essential to the functioning of all organs, including the heart and brain.
  6. Healthy Digestion: Proper hydration helps maintain healthy digestion and can prevent constipation in cats.
